What is an LED?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode; it is an electrical component, also known as a semiconductor, that allows electricity to pass through it. The material of the semiconductor in an LED is chosen very carefully, with the purpose of producing light in mind.

LED lights are popular for many reasons, with energy efficiency and durability being the primary ones; there are various components in the LED lights, and each component has its significance.

The LED lights have various parts, and some of the main components responsible for the functioning of the light are as follows:

Printed Circuit Board

Printed circuit boards (PCB) are substrates to which LEDs are soldered and electrically connected. They are made of FR4, copper, aluminum, screen printing, resin, and glass. PCBs come in different shapes and sizes depending on the LED application. For example, LED strips use thin, flexible PCBs that you can bend and cut to fit your size needs. In contrast, rigid PCBs made of FR4 are used in lamps such as LED tubes or LED panel lights.

LED Chips

LED chips are the main component that produces light in LED lamps. LED chips come in different sizes and packages. Depending on the technology and package, LED chips can be divided into the following categories:

1. SMD LEDs

Surface mount devices (SMD LEDs) are small LED chips that are mounted directly on a PCB. This type of LED package is used in LED strips, TVs, monitors, and more. SMD LEDs of different shapes and sizes can vary in brightness. They are represented by numbers such as SMD2835, SMD3528, or SMD 5050. The first two digits of the number represent the width of the LED, and the last two digits represent its length. For example, SMD3528 means the LED is 3.5mm wide and 2.8mm long.

2. COB LED

Chip-on-board (COB) is a lighting technology that tightly packages LEDs on a single circuit board to create a smooth design. Unlike SMD LEDs, COB LEDs do not have any visible gaps between them. Therefore, it does not have hot spots and provides smooth and continuous lighting.

Since COB LEDs are packed in high density, the lighting brightness is higher. Therefore, COB is ideal for applications that require more focused and seamless light output.

3. CSP LED

Chip-scale packaging (CSP) is a new LES packaging technology designed for compact, high-performance lighting. The size of this type of LED package is comparable to the size of the LED chip. Therefore, it is ideal for achieving high-density and spot-free lighting effects. CSP LEDs are widely used in LED light strips, downlights, panel lights, automotive lighting (headlights, taillights, etc.), and other fields.

Now you may confuse COB and CSP because both are designed for high density. CSP is more compact than COB because these chips are compactly packaged and do not take up any extra space on the PCB. In addition, their color consistency is also better than COB. However, in terms of brightness, COB LEDs are designed with higher lumen output. So if you need high brightness, choose COB; for compactness, CSP is a better choice.

4. Mini LED

Mini LED is a high-tech LED designed as a small-size chip (less than 0.2 mm in size). These Mini LEDs are used in displays, especially TVs, tablets, and laptops. In fact, Mini LED is a bridge between traditional LEDs and Micro LEDs. They are brighter, have higher contrast, and are more energy-efficient.

 

LED vs Incandescent Bulbs: Why LEDs Are Better?

The evolution of LED lights has made incandescent bulbs a thing of the past, and there are many reasons why LEDs are a better choice than incandescent bulbs. Here are some of the reasons to choose LEDs over incandescent bulbs:

LED lights use less energy, while incandescent bulbs use more energy, which puts a strain on non-renewable natural resources. Therefore, LED lights are a better choice as they provide the same lighting levels as traditional bulbs, but use less energy.
